Case study

Shepody Bay Inn,
before and after.

A small coastal inn in Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick. The old site was a WordPress page-builder build; the new one is hand-written HTML on the inn's own hosting, live since 31 August 2026. Same business, same photographs where they were good, everything else rebuilt.

The old homepage further down: drive-time boxes to Moncton, Shediac and the Fundy Trail, then an orange promotional band with a photo slider.
Before: desktop, further down the homepage, as archived on 23 August 2026
The new homepage further down: a welcome heading, one paragraph about the bay, and three features with icons, rooms, tides and daily breakfast.
After: desktop, further down the homepage, live site, 13 September 2026
The old Shepody Bay Inn homepage on a desktop screen: a WordPress theme with a stacked header, a slider and a promotional overlay.
Before: desktop, as archived on 23 August 2026
The new Shepody Bay Inn homepage on a desktop screen: a full-width video of the bay behind a single headline and one booking button.
After: desktop, live site, 13 September 2026
The old homepage on a phone: the desktop layout shrunk down, with small text and a slider.
Before: phone, 390 pixels wide
The new homepage on a phone: the video framed for a portrait screen, the headline and booking button readable without zooming.
After: phone, 390 pixels wide

What changed

  • Shepody Bay Inn's management reports about $15,000 a year no longer going to third-party booking channels since all reservations moved to the inn's own website.
  • WordPress with a page builder, 16 plugins and 91 non-core database tables became six hand-written pages with no plugins and no database.
  • Mobile Lighthouse on 6 September 2026: Accessibility 98, Best Practices 100, SEO 100.
  • The hero video is cut for the phone, not shrunk from the desktop version: a portrait rendition carries only the pixels a phone actually shows.
  • One address, one phone number and one canonical hostname everywhere, with LodgingBusiness structured data.
  • The contact form delivers, with a real success state instead of a broken mailto link.

For the record

Screenshots are dated because websites change. The archived copy of the old site is kept hardened and un-indexable: no forms, no phone links, no structured data, and a banner on every page saying what it is.
